When we talk
about pyramids the mind flies to Egypt, and we immediately think of the majestic monuments of the Pharaohs. Few people know that
there are pyramids in Lombardy too: along Lake Iseo, towards Valcamonica, there is a road sign indicating '
Pyramidi di Zone' (Pyramids of Zone). Travelling around the various bends in the road that leads to the town, cones suddenly appear, surmounted by boulders that look like hats.
Looking at this unusual landscape, one wonders what strange magic allows these hats to remain suspended in the air, regardless of the weather and the winds, almost motionless and seemingly poised to challenge the elements.
The path that leads up to the base of the pyramids starts at
Cislano parking area. From there one can set off on foot, surrounded by greenery, to observe this exciting spectacle. The pyramids were formed by the erosion of water on terrain of morainic origin, giving rise to this strange and surreal sight.
One can see
pyramids of a few metres in height, and others that reach 30 metres. The pyramids of Zone represent
a very rare phenomenon, which over time is destined to disappear. But as long as the boulders that form the hats remain in their usual positions, we will always have the towering Pyramids. If not, we will see the fast disintegration of what has endured over millennia.
