The Valle Camonica, or Valcamonica
, is one of the most extensive valleys of the central Alps at about 90 km long. It begins at the Tonale Pass, 1,883 m
above sea level and ends at the Corna Trentapassi near Pisogne, on Lake Iseo. It is crossed along its entire length by the course of the Oglio river, which begins in Ponte di Legno and enters the Sebino between Pisogne and Costa Volpino. It exits at Sarnico, going on to flow into the Po. The Valle Camonica derived its name from the Latin term which classical writers once used for the people who lived there: the Camunni.
In addition to several national or regional parks of environmental interest
, such as the Stelvio National Park
and the Adalmello Regional Park, there are the parks dedicated to rock engravings, through which it is possible to admire a part of the vast Camunian prehistoric heritage. There are numerous ski lifts such as Ponte di Legno, Borno, Montecampione, Aprica, and Val Palot
while the main attractions for the summer season are walks along the Italian Alpine Club paths in the Adamello Park, and the thermal spas and wellness centres connected to the Terme di Boario and Angolo Terme.
The Terme di Boario Spa Park Resort is a place of regeneration for body and spirit; major renovation works to the buildings and services were begun in the spring of 2008 and are now completed. From the mountain setting of Boario Terme, four springs whose waters have special qualities gush forth. These are true sources of well-being, whose benefits can be appreciated day after day, throughout the year. The waters of the four thermal springs of Boario reach the valley from Monte Altissimo, following long, slow underground courses between the rocks and the diverse, rich hydro-mineral deposits, in a slow journey that takes 15 years.
These are sulphate-bicarbonate-calcium
waters of the cold type (13-15°C), which are purified as they enrich themselves with the precious mineral elements with which they come into contact, thus determining their different therapeutic properties. This is why the springs have widely different concentrations of salts, a feature that allows different possibilities of therapeutic use, for prevention, treatment and rehabilitation. In addition, a new Spa and Wellness Centre has been created within the splendid Parco delle Terme di Boario, an ideal place to rediscover one's psycho-physical balance and recover energy, beauty and inner harmony. It is open every day (except Tuesday), and booking is recommended.
