A river, a bridge and a lot of lake
It is one of the most frequented and loved communities on the lake. It is situated at the southernmost tip of the Bergamascan shores and has a population of about 5700 inhabitants. Years ago, during the cleaning of the water bed adjacent to the port, remains of an ancient Lacustrian village built on stilts over the water which certified the prehistoric origins of this town. The historical centre is called “Contrada”, built in a semi-circular shape and composed of narrow streets, covered porches and old stone walled houses. The Parish Church of Sarnico is dedicated to S. Martino Vescovo, even if the patron saint of the town is Mary. The cultural heart of the town is the gallery/museum of Gianni Bellini : which holds more than 150 works of art, most of which are paintings from various eras. The museum can be found inside the Palazzo Gervasoni situated in the area of the historical centre located highest up towards the mountains. Sarnico offers captivating walks along the lake front where numerous bars and ice-cream shops can be found. Crossing the iron bridge, the walkway continues along the banks of the river along the famous Via XX Settembre. Sarnico offers numerous solutions for sport lovers, such as wind surfing, canoeing, and water skiing. For lovers of nature and walks in the mountains the Forcella-Moler path can be followed.
