The home of olive oil
Another famous tourist destination which extends over a vast mountain area right down to the coast of the lake. The initial inhabitants where initially spread over an area which covered the districts on higher ground into the hills and along the river. In ‘800 a lot of industry concerned with the processing of wool which are present to this day. One side sees lush mountains covered in characteristic olive trees where as on the other the city as it is today has slowly developed along the coast of the lake. Many routes are possible by foot: one can walk along the ancient Valeriana Roman road to the San Pietro Hermitage , climb up the valley to the famous Pyramids of Zone , or for a less inclined route one can choose to walk along the ex-coastal road (now gardens, walkway and cycle track) from the district of Vello to Pisogne. The tranquil lake side areas are filled with romantic angles to take in the view and ideal for dinner at one of the many open air restaurants which can be found along the coast. With the olive present in so many aspects of this village, Marone was renamed “City of Olive Oil” and in fact the Olive Oil Festival is held here with traditional and varied dishes from the region incorporating this particular are served once a year.
