Walks in a semi-lunar landscape and diving into the prehistoric
Usually when one thinks of pyramids the mind usually conjures up images of Egypt and the majestic monuments of the Pharoahs. Few people know that pyramids exist in Lombardy, home of lakes and natural beauty. Coasting the Iseo Lake in the direction of Valcamonica, a street sign will point you towards: Piramidi di Zone. Following the various twists and turns on the road out of the town of Marrone on the way to Zone you will suddenly come across huge tall cones rising up out of the vally with what appears to be giant heads on top but which on closer inspection reveal themselves to be huge boulders suspended many metres in the air. One is drawn to contemplating what strange magic maintains the static nature of these unusual natural sculptures immune to the elements and the passage of time. From the parking in Cislano, the path begins that will wind you down into the valley immersed in the surrounding greenery to the very base of these magnificent and unique pyramids. They have been formed over time via the erosion of the clay rich soil by river and rain around and under the many boulders of varying sizes found within. The boulders protect the ground directly underneath them giving rise to this strange and spectacular site. Pyramids in this way can go from just a couple of metres to up to 30 metres in height! The Pyramids of Zone are a very rare phenomenon in the world and over time are destined to disappear. Up until the boulders resist and carry out their predetermined roles the pyramids remain, however once they give in, the disintergration of something that has resisted for thousands of years will be swift.
Once upon a time...
