Days spent between the water and the sky, walking the coastline of the lake
The inhabitants of Iseo have almost completely cancelled the original name of the lake that links it back to prehistoric times. The Sebino – the original name for this mirror of water – has simply become the Iseo Lake. This pleasant town of almost 8500 inhabitants, is an essential stop for anyone visiting the lake. A large number of tourists choose as their base Iseo, both for trips to Montisola, for the infrastructure present there (luxury hotels, camping sites right on the lake, guesthouses, etc), and for the large quantity of shops and boutiques that line the water front and the little streets and alleys that lead of it. The historical centre of Iseo is characterised by villas and mansions decorated with ornate frescoes. Storical homes face onto the main square: Piazza Garibaldi, which gets its name from the statue that rises in its centre where it was the first Italian statue dedicated to the hero (Garibaldi) who united the two halves of Italy as one. Not to be missed is the Oldofredi Castle now the headquarters of the communal library, and the Pieve di S. Andrea the Iseo parish church first erected in 1150. A characteristic area of Iseo is the Torbiere, a nature reserve, where for years various species of plants and animals have made these peat marshes their home.
